Product Description
The Instant Hawaiian booklet by Robert Boom offers a brief vocabulary of Hawaiian for people who are curious about the language or want to learn a few phrases. It starts with a pronunciation guide for the letters of the Hawaiian alphabet and some rules for placing word stress. Following this are topical lists of words given in Hawaiian and English including: colors, nature, times, parts of the body, food, kinship terms, Hawaiian equivalents for English women's names, Hawaiian equivalents for English men's names, Hawaiian names, social phrases, common questions, common answers, colorful expressions, and everyday terms. Pronunciation hints are provided through the sections on names, but after that it is assumed that the reader has figured out the pronunciation rules enough to make out the pronunciation of the remaining words and phrases without help. This fun booklet is a quick little read. It's written for general readers rather linguists, so you don't need any special grammatical knowledge to make sense of it. The scope of the book is very limited-it's just a taste of Hawaiian, not an introduction to the language. Robert Boom holds an MA in ESL from the University of Hawaii and has taught English to international students for many years. He currently teaches a Writing class at Hawai`i Pacific University. He has also worked in the business world and is interested in teaching Business English.
